Love's Second Chance

Samantha Jones, a 30-year-old workaholic lawyer in New York City, gets a second chance at love when she runs into her high school sweetheart, Jack Smith, who has just moved to the city. Though Samantha has reservations about rekindling an old flame, she can't deny the spark is still there between them. As they get to know each other again, Samantha must learn to open her heart and make room in her busy life for love.

Samantha rushes around getting ready for work. She mutters to herself:
SAMANTHA
Ugh, already 6:30am. This week is insane.
She quickly throws on work clothes and gulps coffee.

INT. NEW YORK STREETS – MORNING

Samantha hurries along busy sidewalks, checking her watch.

INT. OFFICE LOBBY – MORNING

Samantha rushes to the elevators.
SAMANTHA
Morning Susan! Any messages?
RECEPTIONIST
Yes Ms. Jones, several from Mr. Henderson about the deposition. Here are your messages.
Samantha sighs heavily as she takes a large stack of pink message slips.

INT. OFFICE ELEVATOR – MORNING

Upbeat music plays as Samantha rides up with other professionals.

INT. LAW FIRM OFFICE – MORNING

Samantha weaves between cubicles quickly. Coworkers try to catch her attention.
COWORKER [Bruce]
Samantha, got a minute to talk about the Allen briefs?
SAMANTHA
Sorry Bruce, I’m late for a meeting. Let’s chat at lunch!
She rushes into a conference room, sits down with other lawyers.
SAMANTHA
So sorry I’m late everyone, the Patterson case had me up all night. Let’s get started.
They begin discussing case details. Phones ring, copier whirs.
SAMANTHA
Okay, we need those files in an hour. I’ll review before the 2pm deadline.

INT. NEW YORK STREETS – DAY

Samantha walks rapidly down the street, focused on her phone. She accidentally bumps into a tall man, spilling coffee.
SAMANTHA
Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!
JACK
Well if it isn't Samantha Jones. Still as graceful as ever I see.
SAMANTHA
Jack?! Wow, how are you? What are you doing in New York?
JACK
I just moved here. Teaching history. Figured it was time for a change of pace.
SAMANTHA
That’s great! Unbelievable running into you like this. We should catch up over dinner!
JACK
I’d love that. Let me give you my number, I still make a great pasta primavera.
Samantha smiles warmly as they part ways.

INT. SAMANTHA’S APARTMENT – EVENING

Samantha rifles through her closet, clothes strewn about.
SAMANTHA
Ugh, I have nothing to wear!
She holds different outfits up to herself.
SAMANTHA (CONT’D)
Too boring, too flashy, too stuffy...
Her phone rings, she answers on speaker.
SAMANTHA (CONT’D)
Hey Mom! I have a date tonight with Jack Smith, can you believe it?
MOM (V.O.)
Your high school sweetheart? How wonderful!
SAMANTHA
I know, it’s crazy. We just ran into each other. I’m suddenly feeling like a teenager again.
MOM (V.O.)
Just relax and be yourself, honey. He obviously likes you already if he asked you out!
SAMANTHA
You’re right. Okay, red dress it is! Wish me luck!
Samantha takes a deep breath and puts on the red dress.

Jack and Samantha sit across from each other at a candlelit table.
JACK
You look incredible, Sam. New York suits you.
SAMANTHA
Thanks! You look great too. This takes me back to senior prom a bit!
JACK
We were quite the pair - the class president and debate team captain. Perfect match.
SAMANTHA
We did make a good team, didn’t we? I have such fond memories of that time.
Jack reaches across the table to touch her hand. Samantha pulls away.
SAMANTHA (CONT’D)
Let’s just take this slow, okay? I like spending time with you but my life is complicated right now.
JACK
Of course. I’m just happy to be here with you tonight.
They continue chatting over dinner. When they part ways, Jack goes in for a kiss, but Samantha turns, and it lands on her cheek.

INT. SAMANTHA'S APARTMENT – NIGHT

Samantha talks to her mom on the phone, pacing. SAMANTHA So we had dinner last night...I don’t know, it was nice but also strange given our history.
MOM (V.O.)
Well that’s to be expected after so long apart. But did you enjoy catching up?
SAMANTHA
I really did. We laughed so much, and I felt all those old feelings again. He’s still so charming.
MOM (V.O.)
It sounds like you two still have a connection! Just give it some time, relationships need care.
SAMANTHA
You’re right. I need to stop putting my career first and make room for love. I’ll give this a real shot!

INT. LAW FIRM OFFICE – DAY

Samantha is typing rapidly at her desk. A coworker brings over a huge bouquet of pink roses.
COWORKER
Special delivery for a Miss Samantha Jones!
Samantha reads the note attached.
SAMANTHA
"Looking forward to seeing your smile again soon - Jack" Wow...
LATER:
Samantha texts Jack thanking him for the flowers. She agrees to see him again Friday night.

INT. CENTRAL PARK – DAY

Jack and Samantha stroll together on a sunny day.
JACK
Remember our first date here freshman year? When we walked straight into that street performer?
SAMANTHA
(laughing)
Oh yes! I was mortified but we couldn’t stop laughing. I felt so carefree with you.
JACK
Senior year was the best. I’ll never forget dancing at prom...
SAMANTHA
Me neither. We had something special. I want to make new memories with you, Jack.
They kiss passionately under a tree.

INT. SAMANTHA'S APARTMENT – NIGHT

Samantha rushes around her kitchen cooking. The doorbell rings.
SAMANTHA
Coming!
She opens the door. Jack holds flowers and wine.
JACK
Wow, something smells amazing!
SAMANTHA
Thanks! I made my grandma’s lasagna recipe. I wanted an excuse to use my kitchen.
They sit down to eat by candlelight.
JACK
This is incredible, Sam. You’ve really outdone yourself.
Samantha blushes at the compliment. After dinner they dance closely in the living room.

INT. SAMANTHA'S APARTMENT – NIGHT

Samantha comes home late from work.
SAMANTHA
Sorry I’m late, hon. Crazy day. I have to go to London for two weeks next month for a big case.
JACK
Wow, two weeks? That’s a long time. I’ll miss you like crazy.
SAMANTHA
Me too. Bad timing, but it’s a great opportunity career-wise.
JACK
I’m proud of you. We’ll get through it. I’ll be right here when you return.
Samantha kisses Jack, touched by his support.

INT. AIRPORT – DAY

Samantha grabs her luggage after returning from London.
JACK (O.S.) Samantha!
She turns to see Jack and embraces him.
JACK
I wanted to surprise you and pick you up! I missed you so much.
SAMANTHA
I missed you more! Being away made me realize how I truly feel. I’m completely in love with you.
JACK
Oh Sam...I’m so in love with you too. No more time wasted - let’s do this!
They kiss passionately, reunited at last.
